Packaging: The box is a lot better than the rest of the product. Very nice photograph of a modern gun holster which Billy The Kid never used, and the inside flap has a brief biography of Billy The Kid, who was shot dead at the age of 21 by Pat Garrett. For some detailed and quick reading about Billy The Kid, check out: The Wild West's Billy The Kid and Scribe's Tribute to Billy The Kid.
The Headsculpt and Figure: The body is one of the standard Sideshow Toys' light plastic version of a Dragon Body. These figures feel fragile and flimsy. The Headsculpt is supposed to be of Billy The Kid, but it looks like one of the Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, or a typical character on Buffy or maybe it is Angel's son?? The face is too fat and naive-looking to fit Billy The Kid. As you can see from the photos of Billy The Kid, the real Billy had a harder and thinner face. He also did not have collagen-enhanced red lips. On the other hand, considering he was only 21 when he died, how hard-bitten did he look?
The Outfit: Except for the maroon shirt, the rest of the outfit looks good. He is wearing a vest, bandana, and a coat that looks like it was an ancestor of a modern-day windbreaker. The materials are GI JOE quality. This outfit is not up to the level of Dragon's World War II outfits. On the other hand, it is pretty good compared to a standard GI Joe set. Check the photo of a GI Joe wearing the Billy the Kid outfit and handgun.
The Gear: Really the worst part of the set. Billy has a handgun and holster that looks like it was made for the 9" Action Jackson figures. It is small. The rifle looks very well detailed, but the tip broke off mine while I was putting it in the hands of Billy. He also brings a spare hand and a rubbery knife. If you can pull the hand off without breaking the wrist, then you can put the spare on it. A miniature Wanted Poster is also included.
Price: Originally sold for $35.00 plus shipping, this set went into clearance as soon as the first wave of die-hard fans realized that the quality of this set was somewhere between Power Team and Soldiers of The World which are both priced at $7.99 per action figure. At this point, reports are that a few Online Dealers still have some at the $14.99 clearance price. Based on the original MSRP of $35.00, and how little this set delivers for that price; I have to grade Billy The Kid pretty hard. If Billy were alive today he would be gunning for me!
Grade: D
