Art Design: The box has an elegant slipcase design. The inner window box is covered by a wrap-around outer box that has the photo of the Red Baron on the front and historical information about him on the back. The back of the inner box has a photo of Von Richtofen visiting a military tombstone and it lists Von Richtofen's own particulars (May 2, 1892-April 21, 1918). This set is manufactured by In The Past Toys, but the box lists the sister company, Blitzkrieg Toyz.
Headsculpt: The most glaring flaw is the headsculpt. It looks to British to be Manfred Freiherr Von Richtofen. The hair style on the top of the head is well sculpted, but the sides of the head were apparently painted on by hand, and whoever painted them did a pretty bad job. The painted-on hair color is uneven. Apparently Von Richtofen was manufactured with a Fade Hair Cut, and then someone decided it was not historically accurate and painted in the rest of the hair. The headsculpt and the rubber bendy hands are a pale chalky flesh tone which does not match the body of the figure.
The Clothing: This is the bright spot of this set. The flight jacket seems to be made out of real leather or else a very good version of imitation leather. The collar has a very well made fur lining. This jacket has metal snaps and it looks pretty good. The German uniform fits very well and it has a couple of different Iron Cross medals affixed to it. The leather cap fits well and looks realistic. A scarf and tall boots are also included.
Gear: The figure includes goggles. Considering that this figure was originally sold for around $59.99; a compass, map and case, sidearm, or other gear would have been a substantial improvement.
Overall: Collectors can find The Red Baron from online dealers for around $10. With the outfit and cap on, The Red Baron displays very well. The uniform, flight cap, metal Iron Cross medals, and the nice jacket are worth the price.
